Note on the Provenance
This collection has been grouped as an artificial accession. There is no extant record of donation for the majority of the collection's items, with the exceptions noted. In addition, the collection consists of media from several different sources, including commercial and nonprofit, professional and amateur, edited and unedited. The collection's overlying principle is the inclusion of every item of moving image material within the museum in a central finding aid. This collection is therefore primarily virtual, as these items are grouped according to kind rather than source.
Scope and Content
The DuSable Museum of African American History Moving Image Collection consists of both items that pertain in particular to the museum itself (its history and productions) and items that were donated and collected for their greater relevance to African American history. For this reason, the collection is divided into two series, the Moving Image Archive and the Moving Image Library, which are housed separately. The collection includes several different formats, including VHS, Betacam, and U-matic video as well as several 16mm, 8mm, and Super 8mm films. Since the museum only has the equipment to view VHS video, the organization of the other formats has relied largely on the labels of the others for clues as to their contents. In some cases, VHS copies have been made of the other formats and this has been noted, when applicable, in the description of that item. The dates of these items have been solely based on dates as noted on the items themselves or which could be deduced from the content of the images. As a result, a large number of the items are undated and therefore the date range of the collection and those of its series and subseries are suggestive rather than exhaustive.
Dr. Margaret Taylor Burroughs (b. 1917) can be considered the collection's single greatest influence. Burroughs, founder of the DuSable Museum of African American History and the South Side Community Arts Center, is a prominent artist, writer, and educator whose many accomplishments include several children's books and international art exhibitions and, most recently, serving as the commissioner of the Chicago Park District. Over the years, Dr. Burroughs has accessioned not only her own home movies (both on film and video), but also videotapes she has collected that pertain to her own career and the history and experiences of African Americans in general. The items that can be directly identified as part of Dr. Burroughs' collection have been noted in the finding aid, but have not been arranged as a single subseries. The over-sixty videos and films have rather been arranged according to their content and exist in both the Moving Image Archive and the Moving Image Library.

The Moving Image Archive, 1963-2005
The Moving Image Archive is further subdivided into two subseries: the Video Archive and the Film Archive according to the format of the item. The Moving Image Archive includes videotapes that are either produced by the DuSable Museum, about the DuSable; videos that were either produced by Dr. Margaret Burroughs or feature her, and finally videotapes that are part of other archival collections. It also consists of over ninety 16mm, 8mm, and Super 8mm films that are also classified as archival regardless of fulfilling the previous criteria due to their relative rarity.
Video Archive, 1968-2005: This subseries includes over 240 items. Of these, the bulk are primarily VHS, but the archive also holds a few Betacam and U-matic videos whose titles suggest their inclusion but are currently not viewable due to the obsolescence of their formats. The archive's earliest entries are video transfers of home movies of "Margaret Burroughs in Ghana" (1968) [MV4060] and "West Africa-1968" (1968) [MV4064], both from the Margaret Burroughs Collection. In addition to Dr. Burroughs' home movies, which mainly depict her trips to Africa in the 1960s, 1980s, and 1990s, the subseries includes several Black history television programs that feature Dr. Burroughs as a guest, including several editions of Straight Talk, Face to Face, and Sunday in Chicago with Vernon Jarrett, well-known Chicago journalist and founding member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
The video archive also houses raw and edited footage of the 2001 celebration of Dr. Burroughs' influence at the DuSable Museum and beyond in "Margaret Burroughs: A Lifetime in Art," which features artwork by and interviews with Dr. Burroughs by Willie Dixon, Jr. Beyond Dr. Burroughs, the video archive is the repository for all DuSable video productions of exhibits, performances, lectures, and events sponsored by the DuSable Museum. Some of these constitute footage of exhibits on Duke Ellington and painter Allen Stringfellow, performances from the Jammin' Jazz and Rising Stars series at the DuSable, and events such as the 1986 Storytellers Festival, the DuSable Arts & Crafts Fair, the DuSable Museum Carnival and Benefit from the 1980s, the History Harabee Soiree, the DuSable Museum Walk-a-Thon fundraiser, and the museum's most famous event, the annual Night of 100 Stars.
In addition to news coverage of the DuSable Museum from various networks, the subseries also includes eight episodes of the Junior Christian Science Bible Lesson television show from 1992 courtesy of the David Hart Collection as well as news coverage of Hyde Park resident, Sarah Burk's, successful attempt to break the world record for the longest hair braid in 2003. In its other unique holdings, the video archive also boasts some of the earliest known footage of a ring shout [MV4231] and "Death in an Ordinary Place" (1970-1) [MV4186], a video project from a DuSable High School journalism class that investigated weekly reports of deaths on the South Side of Chicago.
Film Archive, 1963-1971: The Film Archive features over ninety items. They are organized according to their source of production, as either home movies or professionally-produced films, which are mainly independent. Dates are attributed according to what can be identified.
Among its many home movies, the Film Archive features five 16mm home movies from Mahalia Jackson's personal collection. Jackson (1911-1972), considered one of the most influential gospel singers in the history of the genre, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and then moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1927 to pursue a singing career as a member of the Johnson Singers. As a solo artist, Jackson was introduced to the public outside of church audiences by legendary disc jockey Louis "Studs" Terkel and scored a crossover hit with "Move on Up a Little Bit Higher" for Apollo Records. In the 1950s, Jackson joined Columbia Records and branched out into radio, television, and film. In 1956, the Reverend Ralph D. Abernathy convinced Jackson to sing a local program in honor of the year-old Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott. In 1958, Jackson commanded a $10,000-a-week salary from Universal Pictures for her role in Douglas Sirk's Imitation of Life (1959). In the 1960s, Jackson sang at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy and at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s funeral. Three of the five Jackson films in the museum's collection are dated from 1963, including "Chicago and Beginning of Hawaiian Trip, February 1963" [MF4014], "Hawaii and California, March 1963" [MF4015], and "Mahalia's Home for Aunt Duke (New Orleans 1963); Cecelia and Aunt Bell; 4th of July-Patio Chicago 1963; Milwaukee-Outdoor Concert" [MF4016]. In addition, a reel labeled "March on Washington" [MF4017] may contain footage of the second March on Washington on August 28, 1963, at which Jackson performed "I Been 'Buked and I Been Scorned" at the personal request of King. The fifth reel, "New Orleans" [MF4018], is undated but it may contain footage of Jackson's childhood home.
The collection also houses seventeen of Margaret Burroughs' personal home movies, which are labeled and readily identifiable as Burroughs' work. In addition, there are a few other home movies unattributed to any source and several unidentified films may have belonged to Burroughs as well. From what we can discern, the Burroughs home movies date from the late 1960s to the early 1970s and are of all three formats found in the subseries (16mm, 8mm, and Super 8mm). All of these films are travelogues, featuring footage from Burroughs' trips to Africa and the West Indies. Burroughs seemed particularly interested not only in general footage of her trips to Africa, e.g. "Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco August 1971" [MF4007], but also in local festivals and performances. Five of her home movies document these practices: "Ghana, Homowo Festival, Kofirude Village" [MF4008], "Homowo Harvest Festival-Ghana, West Africa, August 1969 "[MF4010],"Jamaica, Denbigh Festival, Clarendon, Morant Bay" [MF4004], "Kenya Kikuyu Dancers" [MF4001], and "Kikuyu Dancers in Kenya" [MF4001].
The Film Archive also includes one 16mm reel labeled "Ralph Abernathy in Germany 1971," [MF4013]. Abernathy was one of the guiding lights of the American civil rights movement. He recruited Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott and, along with King, helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The film, produced commercially by an East German production company, features footage of Abernathy's visit to Berlin in 1971 and was likely meant as a propaganda film in its message of comradeship between African Americans and Germans under Communist leadership.
Another unique aspect of the collection is its possession of 14 production items donated by Joshua Hoffman Productions. These include both complete and edited copies of Hoffman's two African documentaries, Dougoutigi-Portrait of a Living Musician of Upper Volta, West Africa [MF4019] and Bambara Parfait [MF4023] as well as raw footage from both films and the soundtrack for Dougoutigi on a reel-to-reel tape. Hoffman's connection to the DuSable Museum lies not only in his work in Africa, but through his parents as well. His father worked in development for the museum and his mother attended the Art Institute of Chicago with DuSable founder, Margaret Burroughs.
The collection also features several other professionally-produced films, including two 16mm color animated sound children's films, The Magic Tree (1970) [MF4049] and Anansi the Spider (1969) [MF4048], both produced by Gerald McDermott Films. In addition, it includes a six-part educational series, The Black Contribution, which focuses on the achievements of African Americans in art, music, literature, and leadership.
In addition, the Film Archive possesses two 16mm copies of The Murder of Fred Hampton (1971) [MF4051 and MF4052], a documentary made in Chicago by Chicago-based The Film Group, detailing the life and death of Fred Hampton, the leader of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party. It was produced by Mike Gray and directed by Howard Alk. Another notable addition is a 16mm print of Sanders of the River, Parts 1 and 2 [MF4066]. From the title, this could be a print of the 1935 London Film Productions film, starring Paul Robeson and Nina Mae McKinney, but it is more likely, based on the relative age of the rest of the films in the collection, a print of Death Drums Along the River (1963), also known as Sanders of the River, produced by Big Ben Films Ltd. and directed by Lawrence Huntington.
Other films deal with the plight of the African American soldier and the role of African Americans in the arts, including Black American Poetry: "Other Fields, Other Fruits" [MF4036], a 1967 WTTW-11 television program on poets from both the Harlem and the Chicago Renaissance. In addition, along with the videotapes included in the Video Archive that feature the DuSable Museum and its history, the Film Archive also features an 8mm film from the Margaret Burroughs Collection entitled "Ebony Museum of Negro History" [MF4002] (the DuSable Museum's former name) and the 16mm "DuSable Museum" [MF4012].

The Moving Image Library, 1943-2005
The Moving Image Library boasts almost 400 VHS, U-matic, and Betacam items, which constitute the remainder of the museum's moving image collection which do not fit the criteria to be included in the Video Archive. The library houses videocassettes from commercial and nonprofit sources, including broadcast television programs, documentaries, and promotional and public service films. The library's oldest video material, Coal Black and De Sebben Dwarves and Tin Pan Alley Cats, two Warner Brothers cartoons that were transferred from a film print, dates from 1943, and includes videotapes up to present day. While the library is necessarily a bricolage of videotapes from many different sources covering often vastly different material, it has particular strengths in general African American history and the African American experience in the United States, especially that in Chicago; material that celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; videotapes relating to Africa, South America, and the Caribbean, and videos produced by other museums that relate to African American history and culture.
In the first category, the library possesses videos that explore the legacy of slavery, including The Amistad Revolt: "All We Want Is Make Us Free" (1995), from The Amistad Committee and produced and directed by Karyl K. Evans; The Road That Led to Freedom (by Underground Railroad Heritage Tours); Up South: African-American Migration in the Era of the Great War, a documentary by the American Social History Project; Unforgiven: Legacy of a Lynching (ABC-TV); and Slavery's Buried Past, a Fox television program on the 1991 discovery of slave remains in New York City that sparked a major controversy and redefined the popular understanding of the North's complicity in slavery. In addition, it also includes films on the experience of African American soldiers, such as American Giants; The Tuskegee Airmen, Black Naval History; I Am the American Sailor, Proudly We Served: The Men of the USS Mason (produced by Blue Jacket Enterprises and narrated by Ossie Davis), and The Negro Soldier, a 1944 War Department Special Service documentary in black & white, as well as footage of African American sports figures, like All We Want is Make Us Free; Negro Baseball League Panel, which interviews former Negro League baseball players and a video copy of the Castle Films newsreel The Sport Parade: Joe Louis Famous Fights. The library also houses It's All Greek to Me: The Why's Behind Black Greek-Lettered Organizations, a look at African American fraternities and sororities.
Besides films produced about African Americans, the library also features work by African American artists and filmmakers, beginning with two films from California Newsreel, Tim Carrier's Family Across the Sea (1991), which traces the connection between the Gullah people on the South Carolina Sea Islands and the inhabitants of Sierra Leone, and Goin' to Chicago (1994), which explores the causes and effects of African American northward migration in the mid-twentieth century through personal interviews with Chicagoans born in the Mississippi Delta. Other African American produced videos and videos about African American art in the collection include Ican Video Production's Film and Video Noir: Black Film Show Case, a WLS-TV program on The Films of Spike Lee, television excerpts from the Oprah Winfrey Show on the rap group the Slick Boys as well as the self-produced video The Slick Boys: Ain't It a Shame, What'cha Gonna Do?. In addition, the library houses two videos produced by the internationally known House of Blues: Foundation Video 1997 and House of Blues New Orleans: Folk Art Demo.
In addition to materials on the general African American experience in the United States, the library houses a number of videos that relate specifically to the African American experience in Chicago. A Vision Comes to Life: Chicago's 57th Street Art Fair: The First Fifty Years narrates the history of the famous Hyde Park event while Art in the Park: First Annual Festival (narrated by Luther Woodley), South Side Family Chamber Orchestra, produced by the South Side Cultural Center in 1992, and Docent for a Day, youth program at the David and Alfred Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago similarly document encounters with art on the South Side of Chicago. Many of the items are more politically minded, beginning with coverage of the inauguration of Mayor Harold Washington, the first African American mayor of Chicago, on May 4, 1987, and continuing with Go For Bad: Portrait of a Gang Member, a 1986 TV-38 program on gang violence in Chicago and Reaching Out - Touching Lives, (1993), a reflection of the Chicago Cornerstone Shelter. Other notable additions include footage of the DuSable High School 1941 Class Reunion and that of DuSable High School's "Urban Ecology Sanctuary. Finally, the library features video items that explore and document the lives of prominent Chicago African Americans, such as WGN-TV's news coverage of the Museum of Science and Industry's link-up with astronaut Dr. Mae C. Jemison, who became the first women of color in space in 1992; Chicago Stories 128: Bessie Coleman: Pilot Pioneer, on the life and times of the famous Black aviatrix, and Timuel Black: Son of Bronzeville, on the famous African American Chicago politician.
In addition to notable African Americans in Chicago, the library includes several documentaries and news programs on the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In particular, the library features two documentaries produced by Falcon Cable, Martin Luther King Jr. "A Man Remembered" (1988) and King Documentary (1990). Other King-related items include Pacific Arts Preview's King: Montgomery to Memphis, WEHS-TV's In Your Interest: Dr. King, and Happy Birthday Dr. King (McVideo, 1995) as well as The Making of: the MLK Jr. Mural: An Artist's Tribute and Chicago Osteopathic Hospital's tribute to King's legacy in it's 1991 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.
The library's materials also extend beyond the borders of the United States. It has a particular strength in videos relating to Africa, in particular those produced for, by, and about Africans and African culture. This includes videos on Africa in general, e.g. the compilation tape Africa: A History Denied; Louis Farrakhan; Saviours Day (Ghana); 60 Minutes-Louis Farrakhan, Africa: A Voyage of Discovery with Basil Davidson, African History: Nahaz on the March Sims Show: What We Need To Know For Economic Power, Journey to the Motherland Africa, 20/20's Journey to Africa (2001), and Henry Louis Gates' Wonders of Africa: Parts 1-3, and those that focus on specific areas and countries. Air Afrique Burkino Faso, Air Afrique Senegal, The Fulani of West Africa (1986), Hyénes; Yeelen; Keitu; Three Tales from Senegal, Sights & Sounds of West Africa: January '95 (filmed in Ghana), and The Making of an Oduku (1997), which features footage of National Ghana Day in Ghana, all focus on West Africa. In terms of individual countries, the library possesses two films on Ethiopia: African Zion: The Sacred Art of Ethiopia and Sima Video's Ethiopia 2000, in Ethiopian with English subtitles, as well as several on South Africa, including Nelson Mandela Addresses Congress; The Community Arts Workshop, Durban, South Africa; US Africa Airways: America's Flag Carrier to Southern Africa (produced by US Airways), Why Are They Weeping?: South Africans Under Apartheid; and Thula Sizwe: The Group Zulu.
In addition, the library houses a small number of videotapes relating to South America and the Caribbean, such as Carnival in Santiago/Travel to Baconao Park, Cuba en Imagenes, Cuba: Fabulous Shows, and Cuba: Guia Turistica, some of whom originated in Dr. Burroughs' private collection.
Videos produced by other museums constitute the final major category within the library's collection. Among others, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Adler Planetarium, the Smithsonian Institution, the California African-American Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago have produced videos on the music of Duke Ellington, the history of African Americans in the Olympics, the form and function of African Yoruba art, as well as documented the public exhibition of the Hewitt Collection of African-American Art, collected for over half a century by John and Vivian Hewitt and now owned by the Bank of America Foundation.
